Simplifying your life one item at a time. Why with Tabletop Lazy Susans? First we must go back a few hundred years. Before the invention of the Lazy Susan, we had servants bring food in and out of the dinning room. Salting and peppering our food, filling our water and bring in the napkins. This was a wonderful way of life but as things always go life changed. Having servants was a thing of the past. We needed ways to pass items to others without getting up often. So the need of an object that would serve the same as a person but not cost the same. And as always when there is a need, someone will find a way to fulfill that need. .
There are two people who have gotten credit for inventing the tabletop lazy susan. First was Thomas Jefferson, rumor is that in the 18th century he invented it for his daughter Susan who complained that when the food was being pass around the table that she was always last and never got enough food. The other Thomas credited for the invention was Thomas Edison who invented the phonograph which uses the same turn table idea. The Lazy Susan was called a dumbwaiter at that time and is still called a dumbwaiter in Europe. We do not know where the name lazy susan came from, both Edison and Jefferson had daughters named Susan, there were also a lot of servants named Susan, so the origin is unknown. Since the dumbwaiter just sat in the middle of the tabletop it replaced the servant perhaps named Susan, who in this case seemed to be lazy. Vanity fair magazine is credited for the coining of the name, when they had a print ad in 1917.
There is another lazy susan that people think when they hear lazy susan and think of the one in their cabinets. Usually in the lower set of cabinets this lazy susan is used in the corner to optimize space in deep back corners. We do not know when this was invented but we are sure glad to have it.
